The Pathfinder

Your eyes can adjust to darkness
or so the saying goes –
but who wants to dwell in the
shadows, when there’s so much
light to be found?

You may have to feel your way
around at first, tentatively tracking your
surroundings, mapping through your
fingertips,
but soon,

the light will hit.

Radiant, as it streams through
the cracks, beams refracted
into rainbows, through a glass
half-full.

Reflected in mirrors, you see yourself
anew, and at that moment, you feel
like there’s nothing to lose –
so you send out a message, plant your
flag in the earth. It says:

‘I am here.’

Then, just like that, the path
becomes clearer.
For the first time in years,
you’re finding your voice.

The microphone is ready to hear
what you’ll say.
Your mind is ready
to find new ways of making
art
of taking part
of filling the gaps that no-one else sees
of learning new things and imparting
that wisdom
of giving back to your community.

Your voice is steady,
your hands no longer shake.
You’re starting to believe in yourself again,
and trusting your heart to lead the way.
