Artist Call Out

Artist Call Out, Barlborough Festival 2024

Applications are invited from textile artists to create a banner for the Barlborough Festival in July 2024.

Project Brief
Junction Arts is commissioning a textile artist, with community arts experience to work with children from a local primary school and members of the wider public to create a textile banner that will celebrate the heritage of Barlborough and be displayed during the Barlborough Festival.

Each participant will decorate a fabric panel that will be included in the completed banner and we expect 60 people in total to participate in the workshops. This will break down into roughly 30 school children and 30 members of the public.

The school workshop will take place on the 6th of June (a timetable has already been agreed) and the community workshop on the 15th of June. The banner must be completed in time for the festival which takes place over the weekend of the 12th & 14th of July. The successful applicant will be supported at the workshops by a Junction Arts volunteer.

The artist will be expected to hold a current DBS on the update service or be prepared to get one and have Public Liability Insurance of £5 million.

Budget
The total fee for the commission is £1150 including materials, travel and VAT. The winning artist is welcome to utilise Junction Arts resources if useful which include a selection of Indian printing blocks, ink rollers, scissors, pencils & crayons and some fabric pens and inks.

Background
Barlborough village is situated in the north of Bolsover District, about a mile from the South Yorkshire border. Over the summer months, there is a steady stream of events and activities in the village. A partnership of those groups involved in existing activities has come up with the idea of a Barlborough Festival, the aim of which is to give existing activities a higher profile, enable new events to be developed and give the audience more choices. The festival will include the annual Brass on the Grass concert, the Church patronal festival, which will include a comedy club, flower festival and a Songs of Praise event, a Heritage Centre event, a fun run, a Barlborough picnic and fun afternoon, the RHS Open Gardens event and an art exhibition hosted by the Methodist Church, Summer Exhibition. The Brownies will also prepare decorations for the Church and the well. We want to support the event by developing a Barlborough Banner which tells the story of Barlborough from history to the present day. We aim to use the banner at all village events and to support future Barlborough festivals.

Junction Arts is an award-winning community arts charity that has been working with communities in Derbyshire since 1976. Annually we deliver around 20 projects, working with disadvantaged communities and people of all ages to create a better future for everyone through the arts.
