Artist Call Out

Artist Call Out - Chesterfield Children's Festival & Tapton Lock 2024

Applications are invited from musicians and storytellers to create a new piece of work that will be performed at our Chesterfield Children’s Festival in July 2024 and at Tapton Lock in September 2024.

Project Brief
Junction Arts want to commission a promenade performance piece to showcase at our two summer events. There will be two days of performances in total, one day at the Chesterfield Children’s Festival on Sunday 28th July and one day on either 7th or 8th September at Tapton Lock.

The work will be co-created with three groups of children and/or young people from Chesterfield, Bolsover and North East Derbyshire. Junction Arts will identify the groups and facilitate the sessions.

We’re looking for joint applications from musicians and storytellers who can work collaboratively to create and tell, stories that engage the audience and celebrate the area. This commission can incorporate other creative elements and needs to be adaptable to the different landscapes of both festivals. For example, it may be possible that some part of the work could take place on a narrowboat for the Tapton event.

All creatives working on the project will be expected to hold a current DBS on the update service or be prepared to get one and have PLI of £5,000,000.

Budget
We invite proposals that fall within £5000- £7000 budget  (inclusive of all expenses, preparation, engagement and performance days, materials, travel and VAT)

Proposal

Your proposal should be clear and comprehensive and include the following elements:

  • How you will work co-creatively with young people
  • How participants will contribute to the outcome
  • How long the engagement process will be
  • A description of the performance
  • Applicants’ skills and experience
  • Two references per applicant

When scoring the proposals we will consider quality, creativity, collaboration and value for money.

Background
The Chesterfield Children’s Festival is a free weekend-long festival of arts and culture for children of all ages including music, theatre, storytelling, mindfulness, crafts and more at Queen’s Park. The festival will run from 10am-4pm on 27th and 28th July 2024.

The Tapton Lock Festival is a free weekend event that takes place along the banks of the Chesterfield Canal, adjacent to the Tapton Lock Visitor Centre. The aim of the festival is to raise awareness of the benefits of being outdoors and close to nature.  It’s an established and popular event that’s been running for 11 years but this year we’re taking a year off. However, until it resumes in 2025, we want to offer something over what would have been the festival weekend that will keep the spirit alive for our devoted audience.

Junction Arts is an award-winning community arts charity that has been working with communities in Derbyshire since 1976. Annually we deliver around 20 projects, working with disadvantaged communities and people of all ages to create a better future for everyone through the arts.
