Young Carers Art Club
During February 2021 half-term we delivered two online workshops with young carers who live in Derbyshire.

During the COVID-19 pandemic we were aware that some people were suffering from the effects of lockdown more than others. A carers trust survey into the impact of Coronavirus on young carers showed a steep decline in the mental health and wellbeing of young carers, with 69% of young carers feeling less connected to others since Coronavirus.
We developed online arts workshops for young carers in Derbyshire focussing on them being fun, sociable and safe environments to be creative. We held two workshops in February half-term tailored to different age groups and worked with artist Emma Reynard.
Emma developed two great workshops, sent out all the art materials to children in advance and guided participants through the activities live on Zoom.
In the first workshop younger children used different painting techniques to create their own secret garden and in the second workshop older children learnt to make an origami lotus flower that could float on water.
Emma said: “I really enjoyed the social and friendly aspect of the sessions. I think it’s a really nice way for the young carers to have some time for themselves in a fun and friendly environment.”
Participants said “It was really fun.”, “Really enjoyed it.”, “I like doing craft because it’s my favourite thing.”
