HOW TO GET TO DERBYSHIRE MAKES CHESTERFIELD 

COBBLED STREETS 

Chesterfield is an old market town, and some of the flooring is covered in cobbles, please take care. 

BY CAR & PARKING 

Chesterfield is just 10 minutes from junction 29 of the M1 motorway via the A617. From all routes, follow signs to Chesterfield Town Centre. 

The nearest Disabled Parking to New Square is either on Soresby Street (on street), free for up to 2 hours but limited number of spaces, or Rose Hill Car Park, free for up to 2 hours (then charges apply). 

BY BUS 

Chesterfield Coach Station is approximately 0.2 miles from New Square or if possible alight at Beetwell Street or New Beetwell Street. Here is the most accessible pedestrian route from the Coach Station: 

Step‑Free Route (Approx. 0.2 miles / 350m) 

1. Start at Chesterfield Coach Station

• Exit the coach station onto Beetwell Street. 

• The pavement here is wide and level. 

2. Turn Left ontoBeetwellStreet 

• Travel along the pavement toward the traffic lights. 

• This section is flat and has dropped kerbs. 

3. Cross at the Pedestrian Crossing

• At the main junction (Beetwell Street / Park Road / New Beetwell Street), use the signal‑controlled pedestrian crossing. 

• This is the safest and most accessible place to cross. 

4. Continue Straight onto NewBeetwellStreet 

• After crossing, continue forward. 

• You’ll pass the entrance to The Pavements Shopping Centre on your right. 

5. Enter New Square

• Keep heading straight; Then after the end of the bus stops, turn right. The street opens into New Square, the pedestrianised area in Chesterfield town centre. 

• This area is fully step‑free with smooth paving. 

Accessibility Notes 

• No steps or steep gradients along the entire route. 

• Dropped kerbs at all crossings. 

• Wide pavements suitable for wheelchairs, mobility scooters, and prams. 

• Pedestrianised zone at New Square ensures safe access. 

BY TRAIN 

New Square in Chesterfield is approximately 0.5 miles from Chesterfield Train Station. Here is the least steep route with the least road crossings, there are also slightly quicker alternatives: 

Step‑Free Pedestrian Route 

Distance: 0.5 miles (800m) Time: 10–12 minutes Terrain: Mostly level, wide pavements, dropped kerbs throughout 

1. Start at Chesterfield Railway Station

• Exit the station via the main entrance onto Crow Lane. 

• The pavement here is wide and step‑free. 

2. Cross the bridge over the bypass

• Turn left outside of the train station and head uphill towards the bridge to the left of Malkin Street Car Park 

• Cross the bridge onto Corporation Street  

3. Continue up CorporationStreet to the Winding Wheel

• Continue up Corporation Street. You will find Old Stephenson Memorial Hall Museum and Theatre on your left, along with various bars on your right. 

• Keep going straight until you reach Winding Wheel theatre on your right 

4. Use the pedestrian crossing and reach Chesterfield Town Centre

• Use the pedestrian crossing outside of the Winding Wheel to cross the road over to Stephenson’s Place.  

• Continue to the end of Stephenson’s Place where you will reach another pedestrian crossing outside of Bank. 

• Use the pedestrian crossing again to reach Burlington Street. 

4. Move through the town until you reach New Square 

• Turn right after Greggs and continue down Burlington Street 

• After going past the Market Hall, you will reach New Square Market 

Accessibility Notes 

• No steps on the entire route. 

• Dropped kerbs at all crossings. 

• Signal‑controlled crossings at busy roads. 

• Smooth paving in the town centre. 

• Gentle downhill from the station; return journey is slightly uphill but manageable.
