New Exhibition Celebrating This Girl Codes Participants

A day of exciting workshops at Creswell Crags will launch a new This Girl Codes exhibition.

In March, Junction Arts will celebrate the work of its This Girl Codes participants with a new exhibition at Creswell Crags, featuring art inspired by local history, science, technology, engineering, and maths!

The This Girl Codes project is a multi-disciplinary, co-creational programme that aims to engage and empower women of all ages in Bolsover and North East Derbyshire. Since August 2023 over 100 participants have taken part in a series of taster sessions, pop-up heritage labs in historic houses, castle and cave tours, as well as attending festivals, trips and events during the school holidays.

The project has allowed participants to engage with innovative digital technologies and work with professional artists.  The young people have taken part in several inspiring workshops such as; using electronics to make 3D models talk, using VR to create art, making a green screen film and writing poetry!

These artworks are now coming together for the first time to create an exciting exhibition at Creswell Crags.  To celebrate the opening of the exhibition, Junction Arts is hosting a Showcase event on Sunday 17th of March, which will feature a series of workshops including tote bag printing, VR experiences, sound workshops, green screen filming and a Build a Beastie electronics workshop!

Project Coordinator, Jemma Burton said: “It’s been an amazing year for the This Girl Codes projects, we want to thank your amazing heritage partners Creswell Crags and English Heritage (Bolsover Castle) for partnering with us on this innovative project.

Since August we’ve been busy exploring caves and castles and working with lots of artists to explore science, technology, engineering, and maths creatively.  Over eleven different sessions, our participants have created lots of amazing art, and we want to show it off! The Showcase day will allow people to view the art but also have a go at creating something themselves, it’s going to be a great day!”

The Showcase event is on the 17th of March, from 11 am until 2.30 pm, booking is not required.

The exhibition at Creswell Crags will run until the 26th of April and is free to attend.

There will also be a showcase exhibition at Bolsover Castle on the 23rd of March from 10 am to 2:30 pm with a free drop-in poetry workshop led by local poet, Tyler Turner.
