Tapton Lock Festival Returns for One-Day Celebration in 2026
Junction Arts’ much-loved Tapton Lock Festival will return to the Chesterfield Canal this September for a vibrant, one-day celebration of arts, culture and outdoor activities for all ages.
Taking place on Saturday, 5 September 2026, the free, family-friendly festival promises a packed programme of activities set against the scenic canal-side location. Visitors can look forward to a range of popular attractions, including have-a-go canoeing, a climbing wall, boat rides, circus skills and the ever-popular bubble-ologist.
Families will also have the opportunity to get creative with eco-themed craft activities while enjoying the festival atmosphere. Delivered by two of the ‘Bring it to Tapton’ grant winners – Nadiia Ischuck and Katie Ceesay.
Live entertainment will feature performances from Creswell Brass Band and Sunflower Dance, alongside the launch of a brand-new story trail and interactive activity celebrating Junction Arts’ 50th anniversary.
The festival continues its long-standing commitment to celebrating Chesterfield’s diverse and multicultural community. This year’s event will include a Polish cultural stall from Polonia Chesterfield, showcasing traditional music, food and an exhibition. The Asian Association will be selling food, and there will be several community groups and charity stall holders.
A variety of food and drink stalls will be available throughout the day, including woodfired pizza, coffee, ice cream and freshly baked goods.
First launched by Junction Arts in 2013, Tapton Lock Festival has become a staple in the local events calendar. The free and inclusive event promotes health, wellbeing and creativity, providing opportunities for people to try new activities, connect with nature and engage in cultural experiences. Each year, the festival attracts visitors with its lively mix of performances, workshops and hands-on activities.
For 2026, Junction Arts is working in partnership with a newly established Festival Community Panel. The panel brings together organisations and individuals who have contributed to the festival over the years, helping to ensure it remains true to its core values. Members include Derbyshire County Council Countryside Service, Tapton Lock Visitor Centre, Chesterfield Canal Trust, Pleasley Canoe Club, Polonia Chesterfield, ACCRA, Verba, S40 Local and Junction Arts volunteer Katarina Pavlistova.
Nathan Hamer, Project Coordinator at Junction Arts, said: “We’re pleased to be bringing the Tapton Lock Festival back for its 14th year. Although it’s a one-day event this time, it will feature all the festival favourites alongside a wide range of creative activities for local people to enjoy.”
