Tapton Lock Festival 2017 a ride on The Fly-Cycle beside the canal.

Tapton Lock Festival
Since 2013 Junction Arts have been working in partnership with the Derbyshire County Council Countryside Service to deliver the Tapton Lock Festival along the banks of Chesterfield Canal.

Over a weekend in September, this free magical family event has taken place each year, and it really does offer something for everyone.

There is so much to enjoy, including arts and crafts workshops, amazing outdoor theatre performances, a climbing wall and ‘have a go’ canoes. Visitors can listen to some wonderful story telling, watch the Ashover Brass Band or be entertained by the Rhythm and Rhyme Poetry Group.

We also deliver an outreach programme with a local primary school. Children spend time down at the canal working with a countryside ranger to learn about the environment and discover more about the flora and fauna. Inspired by their visit, they then work with artists to create some beautiful artwork that we exhibit in the marquee for all to see.

How can you help?
We are thrilled to have been selected as one of three projects to receive funding from the Tesco Bags of Help scheme. From the 1st March to the 30th April, customers who shop in the following Tesco stores can vote for their favourite project.

Tesco Extra, Chesterfield- S41 7JB
Tesco Express, Chesterfield – S41 7AL
Tesco Metro, Chesterfield – S40 1PA
Tesco Express, Chesterfield Derby Rd- S40 2EP
Tesco Express, Chesterfield Whitington- S41 9LQ

To vote, you will need to make a purchase within store of any value. There is NO MINIMUM SPEND. You will receive one token per transaction and it’s not necessary to purchase a carrier bag in order to receive a token. (If you’re not offered a token, just ask for one.)

The project with the highest number of votes across our region will receive £4,000, the second placed project £2,000, and the third placed project £1,000.

Thank you for your support – every time you shop, you’re helping us to deliver a bigger and better festival that you, your family and friends can enjoy!

Why do we need to fundraise for this event?
As you can imagine, it costs a considerable amount to put on a festival like this and one of our priorities is that the majority of what’s on offer is free. We want to encourage as many people as possible to not only come and enjoy the event but to explore the area, to walk the footpaths, cycle the cycle ways or just spend quality time outdoors with family and friends.

Whilst we have an amazing team of volunteers who support the weekend in all kinds of ways, we do have some very real costs to cover, for example:

-Artists and performer fees
-Marquee hire
-School workshop and exhibition costs
-Volunteer travel
