Ellie's Story

Volunteering with Junction Arts is helping me create a clearer path for myself in terms of work, and with each day there is something different and new that is inspiring.   I thought I'd share a typical day as a volunteer...

My name is Ellie, I am 23 and have been volunteering with Junction Arts since March 2022. To me, being a volunteer is a very important thing to do – nobody would volunteer for anything unless they fully enjoyed what they were doing, and for me there is no better place to have this experience than with the Junction Arts team.

My most recent involvement was at Creswell Crags for the ‘This Girl Codes’ Curiosity Academy. I attended 2 of the 5 days and my experience in this time was amazing. My first day involved a visit to Mother Grundy’s cave – experimenting with recording sound, wondering who or what Mother Grundy could have been and what the sounds and environment would have been like during that time.

Everyone who wanted to, got involved and the discussions were very interesting. This activity inspired what scents we chose in the perfume making workshop in the afternoon session. I created a scent called ‘slightly damp cave walls’ – it proved quite hard to create a bad scent with the selection of nice ones, but the result worked quite well. This was a very sensory filled day and everyone got stuck in!

The next day was a day trip to Bletchley Park. A brilliant day out with the kids, with so much to learn. Almost too much to see in just one day, but we started the day with exhibitions and ended the day with a guided tour around the park. This trip was very exciting for me to be a part of and to be helping out, I learnt a lot myself and it was my favourite activity so far!
